About the Samantha Elisabeth Porter

Memorial Scholarship

Samantha Porter was a very active girl who lived life to the fullest.  She loved hanging out with her friends and understood what was really important in life.  The Samantha Elisabeth Porter Memorial Scholarship has been created in order to honor the memory of Samantha Porter while assisting college bound seniors in the community who have the same spirit and passion for life that she had.

The scholarship will be awarded each year to at least one graduating senior from North Daviess High School in Elnora, Indiana who will be pursuing post-secondary education at either a vocational school or college.  Applications for the scholarship will be made available in March to be completed and returned to the guidance counselor by April 15th of that year.  A member of the selection committee will retrieve the applications to be reviewed and a recipient(s) will be chosen by the selection committee. Award recipients and scholarship amounts will be determined by the selection committee.  The scholarship will be presented in May of each year at the North Daviess High School Senior Awards Day.

Recipients will be chosen based on how well they represent the qualities of Samantha, that being a well-rounded person who exhibits interest in a variety of activities, such as academics, extra-curricular activities, and community involvement.  There is no GPA requirement for this scholarship as, although education and academic excellence were important to Samantha, she understood that the focus in education should not be on getting A’s, but rather on the importance of learning and understanding.  She understood that education is important, but equally important is the need to have other avenues of interest, such as extra-curricular activities and the fulfillment a paying job provides.  Therefore, recipients of the Samantha Elisabeth Porter Memorial Scholarship must also understand that education is important, but enjoyment in other areas of life are equally important.
